Liner Notes
Liner Notes is the reporting and analytics section of Coincert. It transforms your raw transaction data into visual charts and summary statistics so you can understand where your money is going, how your income compares to your expenses, and whether your spending is trending up or down over time.
Liner Notes generates reports from your transaction data, accessible from the Dashboard.
Access Liner Notes from the Reports tab.
Report Types
Liner Notes offers three built-in report types. A segmented picker at the top of the screen lets you switch between them.
Spending by Category
A donut chart (pie chart with a hollow center) that breaks down your expenses by category. Subcategory spending is automatically rolled up into its parent category for a cleaner visualization.
Below the chart, each category is listed with:
- The category icon and color
- The total amount spent in that category
- The percentage of your total spending that category represents
An “Uncategorized” group appears if any transactions have no assigned category.
At the bottom of the list, a Total Spending summary card shows the combined amount across all categories for the selected period.
Income vs Expenses
A grouped bar chart comparing your income and expenses side by side, broken out by month. Income bars are green; expense bars are red.
Below the chart, three summary cards are displayed:
- Total Income — the sum of all positive-amount transactions in the selected period (green).
- Total Expenses — the sum of all negative-amount transactions in the selected period (red).
- Net Cash Flow — income minus expenses. Displays in green when positive (you earned more than you spent) and red when negative.
If a single month is selected (such as “This Week” or “This Month”), the chart shows a single pair of bars. Selecting a longer period like “This Year” shows multiple months side by side.
Spending Trends
A line chart that plots your monthly spending (or income) over time. This report has its own set of controls, described below. It requires transaction data from at least two different months before the chart will appear.
Time Range: Choose the window of data shown on the chart.
| Option | Data Shown |
|---|---|
| 3M | Last 3 months |
| 6M | Last 6 months (default) |
| 12M | Last 12 months |
| All | All available transaction history |
Category Filter: Narrow the chart to a single expense category, or view all categories combined. Income categories are excluded from this filter (use the Income toggle instead).
Income Toggle: Switch the chart between showing spending trends and income trends. When enabled, the chart title changes to “Income Trends” and the trend arrow colors invert (green for increasing income, red for decreasing).
Comparison Mode: Overlay a dashed comparison line on the chart.
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Total | Shows absolute monthly amounts only (default) |
| vs Prev | Adds a dashed line showing the previous month’s value for each data point |
| vs Last Year | Adds a dashed line showing the same month from the prior year |
When a comparison mode is active, a legend appears below the chart distinguishing the solid “Current” line from the dashed comparison line.
Interactive Selection: Drag across the chart to see a popover for any month. The popover shows the month name, exact amount, and percentage change from the comparison period (when a comparison mode is active).
Highlighted Points: The highest and lowest months in the displayed range are automatically highlighted with larger, orange-colored data points on the chart.
Average Line: A horizontal dashed gray line marks the average monthly amount across the visible data range, labeled “Avg” in the top-right corner of the chart.
Summary Statistics: Below the chart, three stat cards are displayed:
- Average — the mean monthly amount across all visible data points.
- Highest — the month with the greatest amount, with the month label shown beneath.
- Lowest — the month with the smallest amount, with the month label shown beneath.
Trend Indicator: A text description of the overall trend direction (e.g., “Spending increased 12% over period” or “Spending stable over period”). An arrow icon accompanies the text — up-right for increasing, down-right for decreasing, or flat for stable. For spending, an increase is colored red (spending more is typically undesirable); for income, an increase is colored green.
Date Range Filtering
The Spending by Category and Income vs Expenses reports share a date range picker with four options:
| Period | Range |
|---|---|
| This Week | Start of the current week through today |
| This Month | Start of the current month through today |
| Last Month | The entire previous calendar month |
| This Year | January 1 of the current year through today |
The Spending Trends report uses its own time range control (3M / 6M / 12M / All) instead of this shared picker.
